So yeah, Waiting for traffic to pass before the bridge that leads to Mt. Tambourine, which is currently a one way controlled by traffic lights.
While waiting, I decided to try see if I can save petrol and turned off my car, as soon as traffic began to move again I started it.
Would you do this? Would petrol actually be saved?? (This thought came into my head as the Audi Idles at 800-900rpm, and that new cars can come with stop start.)
Thinking of actually doing this at the lights aswell, especially at school as I spend some time Idling waiting for the lights and I do know the order they go in.

If you were stopped long enough, maybe. But otherwise, i imagine it would make no difference because you'd just be turning the car off and by the time your lines prime and engine cranks over, you'll have used a little bit of petrol.
That and i don't think your battery would appreciate it much.

I have TERRIBLE luck when it comes to timing. So I just know that the moment I'd turn the engine off traffic would suddenly move at the speed of light. Thus, I don't do it.

And the Audi starts pretty much instantly, maybe 2 cranks at most when it's warm. But yes, I do agree. I have TERRIBLE luck when it comes to timing. So I just know that the moment I'd turn the engine off traffic would suddenly move at the speed of light. Thus, I don't do it. I'm not too bad with timing so I don't see it as a problem, I usually watch the other lights aswell, when I know the right one is orange I'd turn it on. Only tried it today though. Rising price of petrol got this in my head...

I used to do this when I went to pick my sister up from school if i showed up early enough that I'd be sitting for a long period of time waiting, Of course with me I guess it was more of a courtesy thing, I don't think everybody else in line liked hearing my straight piped 6bt idling for 10-20 minutes.

Yeah, My car isn't that loud so it's not really for courtesy. Just thinking, how much more strain is put on the starter? I know from what villan said, the battery would cop alot of shit from this but I think a Voltmeter is good enough to tell you if the battery's about to die. Did alittle reasearch, and if it's off for more than 10 seconds it's worth it.

Well with my truck I really didn't gain anything but shutting it off, in fact I never did it in the winter because the engine really needed to stay warm or else it got very unhappy.(diesel, cold, no bueno). I really don't know what you'd gain by doing this unless your vehicle got hot in traffic or you were sitting there for a very long period of time like I was those days. I don't think you'd notice a difference between idling for a minute or two versus shutting it off and starting it back up. Doing it constantly would be extra wear on your starter and battery.

Yeah, I'll start testing it when I top off my tank again, see if I can get more than 220km when I reach half way. I heard this doesn't work with Carbies, only fuel injected.

My suburban idles at like 900rpm, so i'd imagine turning it off wouldn't do much, my battery can take it since i've done a big-4 and sit at 14v even under 30a burst loads, so that's no problem.
The real question is, why? How long are your traffic stops? The longest one for me is say, 2 mins, but that's a left turn on a super busy street. I don't see justification for it under typical driving conditions.

Oh, one other time I'd shut my truck off, drive troughs. (straight pipe problems)

Yeah, Audi Idles at 900rpm aswell. I know the battery can take it, just trying to save every last bit of it. Longest I'd sit at lights is around 2 min aswell, which is turning onto a main road.
Was just wondering if it's worth it as looking today, petrol is still 175ยข per litre.
Plus, if I do highway runs, I can get 1000+km out of the tank, If I decide to play in the mountains, 100km will use an eight of a tank (Not accurate, but it's around that so about 700km to one tank doing that constantly) and if I just do the to and from school, that's usually 400-500km's a tank.
So I'm thinking it's the Idling using it all up, or something like that.
