Harro younglings,
SO this is my excel, although most people don't like these cars there is a small growing group of guys who buy these very cheap cars to go racing the excels now have their own rally and circuit racing series in multiple states around Australia, as well as being used for khanacross, autocross and motokhana club racing events around the nation, which is what I am currently doing with my car.
But first, a little history lesson
This is the car when it was first purchased, I was only 13 at the time and my dad loaned me the $650 to buy the car. It was originally found by a relative at a garage sale, we mentioned to him we were looking for a cheap car for me to learn to drive in so we went and checked it out. I was allowed a test drive on the guys property, and despite the very rough body the ca ws mechanically in good condition and the guy I was buying it off was a private mechanic, so we had it up on the hoist for inspection. The car was unregistered, no RWC and had around 205,000 on the clock. Everything was looking good and because this guy was a mechanic he threw in 4 brand new tyres with the sale .
Sadly I was not in the mode of taking many pictures at this stage so all I really have is the picture from the cars first dirt motokhana event, still stock as a rock.
We then took it for a few the initial roadworthy and got a list of what needed to be done, we elected to get it registered as this would be cheaper than buying a car trailer (Which are not cheap) and bypass the hassle of having to hire, plus having it rego'd would make life a lot easier.
Soon I got tired of the ruined exterior and decided to respray the car. HOWEVER I was young and stupid at this age, so I elected to respray it with rattle cans.....intially it didn't look half bad...I even added some striped to distract people from the hail damaged roof...
Because racecar
The car was rego'd in this livery, however within a year or so of the respray completion the car looked like this....
Essentially the car looked like it had a skin condition, mainly due to the rubbish clear coat.
So in the Christmas holidays just gone I gave the car a proper (or as close as I could manage ) respray.
I won't put full details here, there is a thread on the MightyCockMongers forum for just the respray HERE: forums.mightycarmods.com/showthread.php?22960-My-cheap-as-chips-DIY-respray
Basically I sanded the car back via hand then stripped back the badly cracked paint to bare metal, then had my uncle come and help with the actualy spraying, which took place in our shed .
Sorry the photo's of the actaul painting are quite bad, I guess I didn't take as much time when taking them, plus it was only a phone camera
This was the finished product:
More will be posted shortly including suspension, interior, new wheels and tyres
